Tree Planting Ceremony: How It Works, the Script, and the Apartment Version
How a tree planting unity ceremony works, the script, and how to pull it off even in an apartment, from an officiant who's performed it outdoors and in.
Most unity rituals leave you with an object. The tree planting leaves you with something alive. You put it in the ground (or a pot) on the wedding day, and it keeps growing while your marriage does, which is either lovely or a lot of pressure depending on your gardening track record.
It’s a favorite for outdoor and garden weddings, and one of the easiest to adapt for couples who don’t have a yard, so don’t rule it out because you rent.
What is a tree planting unity ceremony?
In a tree planting unity ceremony, the couple plants a tree or potted plant together, adding soil and often a little water, to represent putting down roots and growing a shared life. The tree stands for longevity, grounding, and the things a marriage actually needs: patience, nurture, and time.
It usually happens after the vows and rings and runs four to six minutes, since you’re handling soil. The payoff is a living keepsake that outlasts every other thing from the wedding.
How it works, step by step
- Set the station: the tree or plant, a pot or planting hole, soil within easy reach, a trowel, and a small watering vessel. Put a cloth or tray underneath.
- The officiant introduces it after the rings.
- Each partner adds soil around the roots, together or in turn.
- Family or kids add soil if you’re including them.
- The couple waters it lightly to finish.
The apartment version (don’t skip this ritual just because you rent)
You don’t need a yard. Plant into a pot during the ceremony and transplant later if you move. Good choices: a dwarf fruit tree, a bonsai, a hardy houseplant, a succulent. The ritual is identical; the container just comes with you.

CEREMONY SCRIPT
Tree Planting Ceremony Script
OFFICIANT:
[Partner A] and [Partner B] have chosen to plant a tree together. A marriage, like a tree, doesn’t arrive full-grown. It’s planted, and then it’s tended, through every season.
[Partner A] and [Partner B], add your soil.
[The couple adds soil around the roots, together or in turn.]
This soil comes from where you’ve been. The roots will grow into the life you’re building now.
[Optional: family or children add their soil.]
Now, give it water.
[The couple waters the tree.]
May you tend this marriage the way you’ll tend this tree: with patience, with attention, and with the faith that what you nurture will grow.
